Usually, I have 1 or 2 that stick out as my favourites, but this time, the calibre of writing is so good, that I really don’t think I can pick the best.
I made the mistake of reading Solemn’s Total Net Value, Fifteen Thousand Likes before finished my entry, which had me shitting my pants. He’s a great writer, and it’s evident in the way he’s written a seemingly normal train encounter into a strange, wonderful, and bleak future-world.
Emerald Viper’s Hyde and Seek is your typical fantasy short story, with likable characters, tight plot, and all the right fantasy elements – rouge, wizard, princess, necromancer, rare artefact, escaped shadow. Everything you could want in an adventure.
T Rasa’s outdone himself with a fractal city in Powerless, which stars a mundy man in a magical world who is anything but powerless. He has this uncanny way of approaching things from a rare angle, with entertaining results. All I can say is that you never want to cross this man - the character, yes, but the author too.
Jazzy’s done her best to punch readers in the face with intense emotion, and just continues to turn up the dial from there in Penance. There’s an interesting twist towards the end that adds a whole new layer to the story.
You may have heard, the winner is getting two teacups from yours truly. I’m pretty sure that this isn’t the motivating factor, but it’s just a bit of a bonus. Here’s what they look like:
